As an extra credit project for my astronomy lab (which I need, since I forgot to go to class), we can write about light pollution and submit information about the night sky in our city to GLOBE at Night. Light pollution is sort of a pet peeve of mine because most of it is preventable (well, okay... any kind of needless pollution annoys me). It's just one of the many reasons I'd rather live in the middle of nowhere than the city. On a completely clear night such as tonight, I can see a meager fraction of what I could see in a small town. Once you've been in a place several miles removed from the nearest electric light, you'll never be satisfied with the city sky again.
To contribute info on your location, go to the website at http://www.globe.gov/GaN/index.html and follow the directions. It only takes about 5 minutes to do, but you will need a clear night. They're collecting data through March 28, so you only have another week.
At my house, it is about a magnitude 3 sky. What is it where you are?

You couldn't have said it better. I completely agree. It's my least favorite thing about living in the city...
